The holidays and end of year celebrations are coming! Like last month, here are some of our top tips to prepare you for this season and to eliminate food waste.
Christmas
Start off Christmas day strong: Use any leftover vegetables, bread or cheese to incorporate into a delicious frittata or quiche for Christmas morning!
Dinner time: If you’re going to be out of town after Christmas, make sure your meal will have a limited amount of leftovers according to the number of guests coming to your party (use the food calculator from last month here).
Sweet treats: Utilize any leftover cookies and add as a crumble on top of a dessert parfait or use as a pie crust!
New Years
Menu planning: Build-your-own snacks (such as a bruschetta bar, charcuterie board or even a nacho bar!) are a great way to keep everyone happy with food choices and to reduce the amount of overall waste. Replenishing favorite ingredients as needed will also help keep the food fresh and stop waste from occurring.
Reduce, Reuse, Recycle: When planning your New Year’s Eve get-together, suggest using china or reusable dishes. It’s tempting to default to disposables when you have a large crowd, but if you’re really trying to reduce the impact you have on the environment, ensure you’re using the appropriate dishware. If you don’t have enough reusable cups for all of your guests, encourage them to bring their own or if you’re still in the gift giving-spirit, offer tumblers as a party favor! Lastly, once you’ve tackled the reduce and reuse aspects of waste reduction, advocate for recycling! Make sure there will be a recycling bin and that it’s used and disposed of correctly, according to guidelines in your area.
